Dan Savage posted a very disturbing piece at The Stranger: Female Genital Mutilation at Cornell University.
Savage calls attention to medical research in which a Cornell surgeon “has been operating on little girls with what he judges to be oversized clitorises, cutting away important clitoral tissues, and then stitching the glans to what remains of the shaft.”
The surgeon apparently believes that he’s fixing a problem and helping improve the girls’ future sexual health. Outraged opponents argue that the Cornell surgeon is experimenting on perfectly healthy girls and possibly causing sexual and psychological trauma.
