Harvey Drouillard
Photographer Harvey Drouillard and model Alyssa Van Nuys stand trial for reenacting Lady Godiva's ride in the Chelsea, Michigan, town square. The reenactment was a publicity stunt for Drouillard's "Spirit of Lady Godiva" show at a Chelsea art gallery.
Michigan Live (Oct 2001)
Laura Bien reviews the exhibition of Harvey Drouillard's photographs at an Ann Arbor gallery. Drouillard currently faces trial for restaging Lady Godiva's ride in a Michigan town. "About half of the works portray nudes engaged in otherwise ordinary pursuits at Ann Arbor landmarks. There's a group of twenty- and thirty-something nudes painting the Rock, a nude waitress pouring coffee for a spiky-haired punk kid staring into space at the Fleetwood, and nudes apparently chowing down on ice cream at Stucchi's. In most cases the photo was somehow taken before many of the surrounding people caught on. The result is startling: a nonchalant customer or passerby in the buff milling among unconcerned others, forming repeated tableaux that imply, 'What's so unnatural about nudity?' It's a one-note theme, but a thought-provoking one."
Ann Arbor Observer (Oct 2001)
Columnist Susan Ager thinks police and prosecutors have acted foolishly in the case of photographer Harvey Drouillard and model Alyssa Van Nuys. Police arrested them when they tried to stage a re-enactment of Lady Godiva's ride in downtown Chelsea. "Was it art or advertising or neither or both? Regardless, what happened next was baloney, and everyone knows it: the cops who arrested her and the Washtenaw County prosecutor who charged her when it's not worth a dime or a minute of attention from taxpayers. . . . If this case gets to trial -- my guess is it won't -- I suggest it be tried naked. The judge, jury, bailiff, cops, attorneys - everybody clothes-free, except for shoes. (And, OK, socks.)"
